Selenicereus anthonyanus is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the American Harald E. Anthony, who made the plants bloom for the first time.

description

Selenicereus anthonyanus grows in a climbing manner with tuft-like branches and bright green, flattened shoots that are up to 1 meter (and longer). The 7 to 15 centimeters wide shoots are slightly tapered and rounded towards the tip. The edges are deeply lobed. The lobes are 2.5 to 4.5 inches long and 1 to 1.6 inches wide. 3 short thorns arise from the small areoles .

The fragrant flowers are 10 to 12 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 15 to 17 centimeters. The outer bracts are purple in color and spread out or bent back. The inner bracts are ascending, cream-colored and yellow towards the throat. The pericarpel is covered with numerous, small scales with gray wool, bristles and thorns. The dark green or sometimes slightly reddish tinged fruits are spherical to egg-shaped and up to 6 centimeters long. They are densely covered with thorny areoles that fall off when ripe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Selenicereus anthonyanus is distributed in southern Mexico in the states of Chiapas , Oaxaca , Tabasco and Veracruz . The first description as Cryptocereus anthonyanus was published in 1950 by Edward Johnston Alexander . David Richard Hunt placed the species in the genus Selenicereus in 1989 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
