Selenicereus urbanianus is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the botanist Ignaz Urban .
description
Selenicereus urbanianus grows ajar-climbing to climbing. The shoots are shiny at first, then light green with a hint of purple. They have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The 4 to 5 (rarely 3 to 6) ribs are initially sharp-edged and distinct, later less pronounced. The small areoles are covered with white hairs and 1 to 2 small bristles. Several spread needle-shaped thorns up to 1 centimeter long arise from the areoles , which are initially yellow and later turn brown.
The flowers are up to 30 centimeters long. Their outer bracts are brown to orange, the inner white. The pericarpel and the corolla are covered with long white hairs. The fruits are spherical.
Distribution and systematics
Selenicereus urbanianus is common in Cuba , Haiti and the Dominican Republic . The first description as Cereus urbanianus was published in 1904 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke (1854-1911) and Wilhelm Weingart (1856-1936). Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Selenicereus in 1913 .
Of Selenicereus urbanianus there is a cultivar 'Monstrosus'.
