Selime Kalesi

To the west of the thoroughfare that leads further into the Ihlara Valley is a cemetery with the Seljuk Türbe of Sultan Selim, who gave the village its name. Across the street is a large and well-preserved monastery complex called Selime Kalesi (Selime Castle) . It is carved into the soft tuff stone in the style typical of Cappadocia.

The rooms are grouped around two monastery courtyards. Today the facility is usually entered through the second courtyard in the west. On the left is the kitchen, a room with a square floor plan and a pyramid-shaped roof in which a smoke outlet is installed. There is a stove in the walls next to several niches. Two adjoining rooms probably served as pantries. To the right of the courtyard is a room with a surrounding gallery. It is divided into two floors by niches, which open up in the form of an arcade on the first floor, which is accessible via a staircase . In the Cappadocian rock architecture , such galleries are an elaborate and therefore very rare design. A tunnel leads to another room with a barrel vault . From the north side, which is structured with blind arcades , one reaches a square room, on the ceiling of which a monumental cross is carved. This room was also accessible from the first courtyard through a lintel.

To the east of this courtyard is the monastery church, called Kale kilisesi . It has the shape of a three-aisled basilica with a partially broken porch. The existing paintings have been blackened by fire and are in poor condition. Scenes from the childhood and youth of Mary and from the legend of Christ can be recognized, including the Annunciation, Birth, Adoration by the Three Wise Men, Flight from Bethlehem and Baptism in the Jordan. In the apse is a representation of the Ascension. On the west wall the donors and various unidentifiable figures are depicted.

In the southeast of the courtyard there are further cave rooms, which are interpreted as the living quarters of the monks. They contain profane relief representations as well as the reproduction of a coffered ceiling .
