Anna Selma Voges, who grew up during the founding of the German Empire , married - relatively late at the time at the age of 35 - on August 17, 1912, the Leipzig painter Emil Genthe (Emil Julius Oskar Genthe; * June 28, 1864; † 11. November 1914), who died soon after their marriage.

Thereupon Selma Genthe opened her studio for portrait art in Leipzig in 1915 - also during World War I and the year after the death of her husband - which she later maintained as a “photo studio ” until 1938, initially at Thomasring 15 , then Dittrichring 15 . For a time it operated with a partner as the Selma Genthe & Werner Rosahl photo studio .

From 1919 the photographer created theater pictures with role actors and stage sets as well as artist photographs, movement studies and nude photographs.

Genthe also published the photographs for the multi-part work Body Training of Women in Pictures and Words, which was published by the gymnastics and sports teacher Dora Menthe in Stuttgart at Dieck & Co. from 1925 .

Also during the Weimar Republic, there are two photographs of the dancer Gret Palucca, some of which were signed by Genthe , as art photographs of her expressive dance with the picture credits “Phot. Genthe Leipzig ”in the “ Prospect IV 1926/27 ”with the title Dance published by the concert directorate Arthur Bernstein in Hanover around 1927 . Palucca.

From 1939 on, the “Photo Atelier von Richthoven” was located at the former Genthesche address in Leipzig.
