Life

Selman Uranues studied medicine at the Medical University of Graz, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1981. In 1988 he completed his training as a specialist in surgery and in 1990 he qualified as a university lecturer in general surgery. In 1996 he was appointed associate professor at the Medical University of Graz. In 1996 he was appointed head of the Department of Surgical Research. Uranues has an additional subject in visceral surgery . He received numerous invitations to guest professorships at the surgical clinics of the University of Pennsylvania , Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania 2000, Charles University Prague 2001, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh 2004, at the University of Southern California , Los Angeles 2005 and on John Hunter Hospital of the University of Newcastle 2008 and University of the Witwatersrand , Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2011. Today Uranues is a university professor and head of surgical research in the surgery department at the Medical University of Graz.

Scientific contribution

Selman Uranues has earned an international reputation based on his experience in minimally invasive surgery, visceral trauma and acute surgery. His early interest in surgical research coincided with advances in laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery. Based on his early experimental studies and the increasingly popular clinical application of ever smaller instruments and increasingly sophisticated techniques, including virtual reality and robotics, he was one of the early exponents in the field. A current focus of Uranues is reduced port and endoscopic surgery. There is great potential here for the future reduction of surgical trauma with a large number of procedures. He was one of the first in the world to advocate spleen preservation in injuries.

His pioneering role was also evident in the performance of the first laparoscopic spleen-conserving operations. The application of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and therapy of acute abdominal diseases and reflux surgery represent a further scientific focus. He published one of the first papers on the laparoscopic partial removal of the pancreas while preserving the spleen and its vessels.
