The Mont Royal transmission tower ( French : Émetteur du mont Royal ) is a 63 meter high steel lattice tower in Montreal, Canada . It is not far from the cross of Mont Royal . The transmission tower, which is not accessible to the public, serves as a radio relay station , broadcasting television and radio programs, the radio traffic of the Montreal police and distributing the mobile network . It is considered the most important broadcaster for the city and the metropolitan area of Montreal . The tower is a landmark of the region that can be seen from afar due to its characteristic four fork-like antennae at the top .

history

The first transmission tower on Mont Royal was built in 1944 and served public and private broadcasting. The exposed location on Montreal's local mountain turned out to be very advantageous. The need grew over time. In 1952, for example, Radio Canada also broadcast its program from the previous tower. The current tower was built in 1960. Over the decades, the tower has been constantly expanded and renewed. In 1986, four UHF antennas were installed on the upper platform at its tip . In the summer of 2009, this top platform was once again adapted to the new requirements.
