The Sente Viaduct ( Italian Viadotto Sente ), officially Viadotto Francesco Paolo Longo , is located in central Italy as part of Strada statale  86 between the towns of Castiglione Messer Marino in the province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region and Belmonte del Sannio in the province of Isernia in the region Molise . It spans the Sente, flowing in a deeply cut valley, at a height of 185 m, making it the fifth highest bridge in Italy. Since 2011 it has been named after Francesco Paolo Longo, a worker who lost his life in 1974 during the first earthworks for the bridge.

description

The Sente Viaduct has two lanes with hard shoulders on both sides. There are also two narrow walkways on the main bridge, separated by guardrails . The total length of the viaduct is usually given as 1200 m, in a list of Italian bridges 1600 m are mentioned and a measurement on Google Earth showed approx. 1562 m.

The approximately 640 m long main bridge has four openings, one of which has a span of 200 m. Its superstructure consists of a steel, haunched , hollow box girder with a rectangular cross-section with a cantilevered, 15 m wide deck. The reinforced concrete pillars are tapered and folded at the corners, which gives them a light-looking appearance. The largest pillar is 165 m high, measured from the base to the box girder. When it was completed, it was the highest bridge pillar in the world, together with the pillar of the Gorsexio Viaduct , until it was replaced by the Kochertal Bridge two years later .

At both ends of the main bridge, longer T-beam bridges with 9 and 7 spans made of the standardized prestressed concrete beams often used in Italy .

The bridge was designed by Vittorio and Sergio Scalesse and Ruggero Gigli. The construction work lasted from 1974 to 1977.

Temporary closure

In July 2012 there was a car accident on the bridge in which a sheet metal part of an expansion joint played a role. Further details were not given.

In September 2018, the Isernia Province administration closed the bridge for safety reasons. Later, 2 million euros were made available for repairs. In January 2019, the prefecture explained that there was a problem with pillar no.4, which might have shifted slightly as a result of subsidence in the subsoil and thus bridge fields 4 and 5 were no longer exactly in place. A date for the reopening of the bridge could not be given.
