The Seomjin is a river in South Korea . It drains the southwest of Jeollabuk-do Province , as well as the eastern part of Jeollanam-do Province and the western part of Gyeongsangnam-do Province , and finally flows into the Korea Strait . The Seomjin rises at Palgongsan and reached after 212.3 kilometers in Gwangyang the Gwangyang Bay .

The catchment area of the Seomjin is 4896.5 km². It contains agricultural areas as well as original mountain landscapes, such as the Jirisan area. The otter ( Lutra lutra ) also lives on the river . The main tributaries are the Boseong and the Yocheon .

The name "Seomjin" literally means "Toad Ferry". This may have come from the Hideyoshi invasions in Korea in the 1590s. According to a legend, a gathering of toads prevented the Japanese Army from crossing the Seomjin and from entering northern Jeolla .
