Serafim Smigelskiy

Serafim Smigelskiy (* 1985 in Saint Petersburg ) is a Russian-American cellist.

Smigelskiy had his first cello lessons at the age of six from Galina Koroljowa . From 2000 he was a student of Konstantin Kucherow at the Rimsky-Korsakov College . During this time he won first prize at the Russian state music competition, third prize at the International Mravinsky Cello Competition and second prize at the Mussorgsky String Competition . From 2004 he studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Alexei Massarski and took lessons with Alexander Richter of the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic String Quartet and Josif Levinson of the Taneyev String Quartet . He was also a member of the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet and the Divertissement Chamber Orchestra .

As a student of Martin Storey , he received a graduate certificate from Park University's International Center for Music . In 2010 he went to New York and studied cello with Richard Aaron and chamber music with Sylvia Rosenberg at the Juilliard School . He has appeared as a soloist with the Juilliard School Symphony Orchestra , the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra , the Jupiter Chamber Players , the Argento Chamber Ensemble , the ArsViva Strings Orchestra and the Axiom contemporary music ensemble and is a member of the Tesla Quartet .

As a chamber musician, Smigelskij has performed with Mstislav Rostropovich , Natalia Gutman , Laurence Lesser , Colin Carr , Martin Storey , Eric Rosenblith , Ben Sayevich , Stanislav Ioudenitch , William Grant Naboré , Vassily Sinaisky , Julius Berger , Alban Gerhardt , Giya Kancheli , Alexey Liubimov , Daniel Müller-Schott , Nicholas Kitchen and Peter Stump . His interest in contemporary music led to the collaboration with Georg Friedrich Haas , Chaya Czernowin , Matthias Pintscher , Magnus Lindberg and Steve Reich . As a graduate of Phoebe Carrai's studies at the Juilliard Historical Performance Department , he performed as a baroque cellist with William Christie , Robert Mealy and Nicholas McGegan, among others . He has made concert tours through the USA, Europe, Russia and Japan and has appeared in Carnegie Hall , Alice Tully Hall , the Peter Jay Sharp Theater , Merkin Hall , Lincoln Center and Harvard University .
