Sercial (Portuguese Cerceal ) is a white wine variety that is mainly grown in the wine-growing regions of Madeira , Vinho Verde and Bucelas . The variety is also used in port wine .

It is believed to come from Portugal and has long been mistaken for a Riesling clone, but this has proven to be wrong.

Sercial is characterized by very late shoots and maturity with medium growth. Accordingly, it is sensitive to frost. The demands on soil and location are high.

The grapes are small, compact and often shouldered several times. The berries are very small, oval and have a thick skin. Their color is yellow-white.

The white wines are straw yellow and dry and have a distinctive acidity . Young wines are often fragrant and strict. By storing them get a fruity bouquet . The acid is retained. The best known is certainly the aperitif wine Sercial from the Portuguese DOC Madeira , for which it was also named. This grape variety produces the driest wines in Madeira.
