Ondenc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white grape variety Ondenc used to be widespread in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in south-west France in the valley of the Tarn river between Gaillac and Moissac. The variety is approved in the appellations Bergerac , Bordeaux , Côtes de Bergerac , Côtes de Duras , Gaillac , Gaillac-Premières Côtes and Vins de Lavilledieu . There it is used as a blend wine . Their wines are fine, have a medium alcohol content and a pleasant taste. The white wines have a very neutral scent .

Although the grape variety is high-yielding, growing it is economically risky as it is very susceptible to trickling , raw rot and powdery mildew . It is ideally used in locations that have been dried by the wind. However, due to its disadvantages, the variety is rarely used anymore.

Ondenc is only found in larger quantities in Victoria , where it is used as the base wine for making sparkling wine . In Australia they are known as "Irvine's White" or "Sercial", a fact that was recognized in 1976 by the French ampelographer Paul Truel . The Ondenc is also found in small quantities in Argentina , Bulgaria , Spain , Croatia and Portugal .

The Ondenc is also processed into distillates , where it can make excellent brandy .

The clones 674, 675 and 676 are approved for commercial viticulture in France .
