Sergei Leonidowitsch Markow ( Russian Серге́й Леони́дович Ма́рков ; born July 7, 1878 in the Saint Petersburg governorate ; †  June 25, 1918 in the Metschotinskaja , Kuban region ) was a Russian military with the rank of lieutenant general. He was one of the founders of the Volunteer Army , an association of the White Army in southern Russia at the time of the Russian Civil War .

Life

In 1904 he completed his training as a career officer at the Imperial Nicholas Military Academy ( Imperatorskaja Nikolajewskaja wojennaja akademija ). He fought in the Russo-Japanese War and was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir .

Between 1911 and 1914 he taught at the St. Petersburg Imperial Nicholas Military Academy. During the First World War , Markov fought under the command of General Denikin and was awarded the Order of St. George for his bravery .

After the February Revolution of 1917 , Markov was promoted to Chief of Staff of the Southwest Front, but was later dismissed from his post and arrested for his support for General Lawr Kornilov during the Kornilov putsch ( Kornilowskoje vystuplenije ). On November 19, 1917, Markov escaped from prison in Bychau and together with Generals Denikin and Kornilow set up the volunteer army in the Don region .

At the beginning of the Second Kuban Campaign , Markov was fatally wounded in combat with the Red Army near the city of Salsk and died only a few days later. The volunteer army has named a regiment ( 1-j Ofizerski generala Markowa polk ) after him.
