Bychau is a city in Belarus in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz and the administrative center of the Bychau district . In 1989 the city had about 20,000 inhabitants.
location
Bychau is 44 km south of Mahiljou (Mogilew) on the Dnieper . Train connections exist to Mogilew and Shlobin .
history
Bychau was founded in 1370. Originally it was owned by Švitrigaila (1370-1452), the ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . From 1610 to 1619 the hetman Jan Chodkiewicz had a fortress built here, which was destroyed by Russian troops in the Great Northern War . During the First Rzeczpospolita in 1773 the place became the administrative center of the region.
Attractions
- The synagogue dates from the 17th century.
- The feudal castle was also built in the 17th century.
- The wooden Trinity Church from the 19th century has a remarkable three-story bell tower.
- In the village of Ludtschizy ten kilometers outside of Bychau there is a memorial in honor of Soviet fighters from the Second World War .
