Sergei Nikolajewitsch Lanskoi ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Ланской ; * 1774 ; † March 7, 1814 ) was a Russian lieutenant general who served under Tsar Alexander I and distinguished himself in particular in the Napoleonic Wars .

Life

Lanskoi was of noble origin from Galitsch , Kostroma Oblast .

He entered the military early. On April 16, 1797 he became ensign, on September 8, 1798 lieutenant and on March 13, 1801 adjutant of the Grand Duke Constantine . On October 5, 1801, he was promoted to captain.

Lanskoi then found employment in the diplomatic service for a number of years, most of which in Paris . On August 14, 1805 he returned to the military with the rank of lieutenant colonel . He distinguished himself in the Battle of Austerlitz and was promoted to colonel on December 12, 1805 . He then served in the Russo-Turkish War (1806-1812) .

Promoted to major general on August 3, 1810, he became the commandant of the Belarusian Hussars . As such, he took part in the war against the French in 1812, in which he distinguished himself on the Beresina . In 1813 he distinguished himself in the battle of the Katzbach and was promoted to lieutenant general on September 15, 1813.

During the winter campaign in France in 1814 , he commanded the light cavalry of the Russian corps under General Sacken , especially in the battle of La Rothière and the battle of Montmirail .

In the late afternoon of the battle of Craonne , he was given the task of covering the retreat of the Russian infantry with his hussars and dragoons. He was fatally wounded in the fighting that followed.

Lanskoi left a desire to be buried in Russian soil. His hussars took his body home and buried him in Hrodna ( Russian Гродно / Grodno). His grave is still there.
