Sergei Nikolajewitsch Maximow (better known as Hell / Хелл ; Russian Сергей Николаевич Максимов ; born May 4, 1974 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a German-Russian hacker .

He has been a hacker since the mid-1990s and boasts of breaking into more than 100 blogs and email accounts during that time. He is very famous in Russia and is considered "a legend in the blog scene" and " scourge of the Russian-speaking Internet (RuNet)". His favorite victims are members of the liberal opposition in Russia. He broke into Alexei Navalny's mailbox and hijacked the LiveJournal blogs of Valeria Novodworskaya and Boris Akunin . At the same time, however, he also hacked back blog accounts taken over by third-party hackers, including blogs loyal to the Kremlin and more neutral blogs, as well as those by Putin opponents.

Maximov denies pursuing political goals or being paid for his work - for example by the Russian executive. However, his contributions are often homophobic and - despite his Jewish mother - anti-Semitic. In 2010, the Hamburg public prosecutor's office investigated the “call for a pogrom” against Jews and “neo-Nazi insults” against Maximov.

He achieved the greatest impact by hacking Alexei Navalny's email account, which he said he did not for political reasons but because he was “a crook, a liar and a thief”. In the summer of 2012, he published parts of Navalny's stolen mail traffic with the governor of Kirov Oblast Nikita Belych , which led to the reopening of an anti-corruption case against her. Navalny accused Maximov of being controlled by the FSB security service , which the latter denies. Partly as a result of the hack of e-mail accounts Navalny the suit him Bonn public prosecutor at the District Court Bonn - Schöffengericht for spying data to, the court allowed the prosecution to and terminated the trial on 24 June 2015. Previously, 2013 Maximow's apartment in Bonn was searched.

Maximow has lived in Germany since the 1990s and is a German citizen.
