Sergei Pawlowitsch Zekow ( Russian Сергей Павлович Цеков ; born September 28, 1953 in Simferopol ) is a Russian politician. He was a Ukrainian politician until he defected to the Russian Federation in February 2014 . He is a member of the Parliament of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea . From May 1994 to July 1995 he was chairman of the Supreme Council, the Parliament of Crimea. Zekow played a key role in organizing the referendum on the status of Crimea on March 16, 2014 and has represented the Republic of Crimea as a subject of the Russian Federation in the Federation Council since April 2014 .

Life

Zekow completed his medical studies in 1977 and then worked as a surgeon. He later held various political offices in the Crimean parliament. Because of his role in Crimea's accession to Russia, the European Union and the US put Zekov on a sanctions list in April 2014 . He is therefore subject to an entry ban and an asset freeze.

Zekow is married and has one son.
