Sergei Wiktorowitsch Semjonow ( Russian Сергей Викторович Семёнов ; born August 10, 1995 in Tula ) is a Russian wrestler . In 2018 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 130 kg body weight.

Career

Sergei Semyonov began wrestling as a teenager. His talent was recognized early on and specifically promoted by the Russian Wrestling Association. He belongs to the Sparta Moscow sports club . His coaches are Valery Zhukov and Vyacheslav Ushakov. He is a student, wrestles only in the Greco-Roman style and, with a height of 1.86 meters and a body weight of almost 130 kg, has ideal conditions for a super heavyweight. He lives in Odintsovo, Moscow Oblast.

Since 2012 Sergei Semjonow of the Russian Wrestling Association has been used with great success in the three junior age groups Cadets, Juniors and U 23 at the international championships (World and European Championships). In 2012 he became Junior European Champion (Cadets) in the weight class up to 100 kg; 2013 Junior World Champion (Juniors) in the weight class up to 120 kg; 2014 Junior World Champion (Juniors) again; 2015 U23 European champion in the weight class up to 130 kg; 2017 U23 world champion in the same weight class.

In 2015, Sergei Semjonow was used for the first time in a major international championship among seniors. However, he came in the European Games in Baku in the weight class up to 130 kg after a victory over Miloslaw Metodiew, Bulgaria and defeats against world champion Rıza Kayaalp from Turkey and the Hungarian Balint Lam only on the 7th place.

In 2016 he was the first Russian champion in the senior class in the weight class up to 130 kg, ahead of Vitaly Shchur and the old master Biljal Machow, and in the same weight class at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He mastered this task brilliantly, although he was not an Olympic champion either. The way there blocked the experienced defending champion Mijaín López from Cuba, against whom he lost in the semifinals. With a victory over former world champion Heiki Nabi from Estonia, Sergei Semjonow secured an Olympic bronze medal .

In January 2017, Sergei Semjonow won the renowned "Ivan Poddubny" tournament in Moscow and in June 2017 he was again the Russian champion. At the World Championships in Paris he was not used. Instead, he was at the U23 World Cup in Bydgoszcz, where he won the title in front of Zviadi Pataridze from Georgia.

In 2018 he won again at the "Ivan Poddubny" tournament in Moscow and at the Russian championship. In December 2018 he celebrated the biggest success of his career so far at the World Championships in Budapest, because he became world champion in a superior style with victories over Alexander Tschernetzki, Ukraine, Oscar Pino Hinds , Cuba, Heiki Nabi and Adam Coon from the United States in the weight class up to 130 kg body weight.

At the European Championship 2019, which took place in Bucharest in April, Sergei Semjonow defeated Dawid Owasapjan, Armenia and Miloslaw Metodiew, Bulgaria, but suffered a narrow point defeat (1: 2 technical points) in the semifinals against Iakobi Kajaia from Georgia. He then secured a bronze medal by defeating Tuomas Lahti from Finland. In June 2019 he also competed at the European Games in Minsk. After victories over Jello Krahmer, Germany and Osman Yildirim from Turkey, he lost somewhat surprisingly in the semifinals against Kiril Chrishchanka from Belarus. With a victory in the consolation round over Mikola Kuchmii from Ukraine, he won one of the bronze medals. He was unable to defend his title at the 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan. He lost his first fight against Amir Mohamadali Ghasemimonjezi from Iran on points (4: 6). Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 17th place.
