Serhii Plokhy ( Ukrainian Сергій Миколайович Плохій Serhij Mykolajowytsch Plochij ; born May 23, 1957 in Gorki , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian - American historian and university professor.

Life

Serhii Plokhy was born in Gorki, today's Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, to Ukrainian parents. He spent his childhood and youth in Zaporizhia . In 1980, he graduated in history and social sciences at the University in Dnipropetrovsk , and then he studied until 1982 historiography and source studies at the Russian Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow . He received his PhD in 1990 from the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev .

From 1983 to 1991 he taught at the University of Dnipropetrovsk and became a full professor there. From 1996 he was Professor of History at the University of Alberta , where he founded the Research Program for Religion and Culture. He was also the deputy director of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and The Peter Jacyk Center for Ukrainian Historical Research at that institute. Since 2007, Serhii Plokhy, succeeding Omeljan Pritsak , Mykhailo Hrushevsky has been Professor of Ukrainian History and Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University . He is considered the leading authority on the history of Eastern Europe and Ukraine in Canada and the United States.
