Serhij Svyatchenko ( Ukrainian Сергій Святченко ; * 1952 in Kharkov ) is a Ukrainian artist.

Life

Svyatchenko had trained as an architect and artist at the Academy of Art and Architecture in Kharkov until 1975 and received a doctorate from the architecture school in Kiev in 1986 .

His works belong to abstract expressionism , whereby he paints over motifs several times. In his landscape paintings, depth is often more important than the subject itself. Acrylic painting on canvas is the preferred medium, but Svyatchenko has also worked with installations, photo and video art. He also used retouching photos .

In the Ukraine he became known for his collages . Abstract art was met with incomprehension in the former Soviet Union, however, because art was supposed to serve the regime .

Svyatchenko draws inspiration for his art from surrealism and architecture, among other things . Artists like Michelangelo and Le Corbusier , who have succeeded in uniting art with architecture, are his role models. He also mentions his father Evgenij Sviatchenko , who worked as an architect and painter (especially watercolors), as a source of inspiration . He introduced the son to Russian art from before the October Revolution of 1917.

Svyatchenko has lived in Denmark since 1990 . His son Erik Sviatchenko is a Danish national soccer player.
