Seydou Badian Kouyaté , today officially Seydou Badian Noumboïna (* 1928 in Bamako ; † December 28, 2018 ) was a Malian writer and politician .

Career

Badian Kouyaté studied medicine at the French University of Montpellier and wrote his doctoral thesis on African healing methods for yellow fever . In 1956 he returned to Mali and was appointed a district doctor. Just a year later and three years before his homeland became independent, he published his first novel under the title Sous l'orage .

Since he was close to President Modibo Keïta , he wrote the text for the Malian national anthem Pour l'Afrique et pour toi, Mali . After the country gained independence, he became Minister of Agriculture and Planning. After the government reshuffle on September 17, 1962, he held the post of Development Minister. He was of the opinion that a unity party was the only way to form states in post-colonial Africa . In 1965 he published Les dirigeants face à leurs peuples .

After the coup of Moussa Traoré in 1968 he was first deported to Kidal , later he fled to Dakar in neighboring Senegal . He published the two novels Le Sang des masques (1976) and Noces sacrées (1977).

In 1997 he ran for the presidential election, but like many other opposition candidates against incumbent Alpha Oumar Konaré, he withdrew his candidacy in protest at the poor organization of the elections. Although he was a member of the Sudanese Union US-RDA from the very beginning , he was expelled from the party in 1998 because he opposed part of its leadership, which advocated non-recognition of the institutions after the election was challenged.

In October 2007 Badian Kouyaté published his novel La Saison des pièges . In 2009, Seydou Badian Kouyaté changed its name and has since been officially called Seydou Badian Noumboïna, after a village in Macina County.
