Seyyan Hanım

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seyyan Oskay , known publicly as Seyyan Hanım (born 1913 in Thessaloniki ; died 16 May 1989 in İstanbul ) was a singer in Turkey in the 1930s. Her repertoire included tango , foxtrot and rumba pieces in Turkish.

Her talent for singing was discovered as a graduate of the Istanbul Belediye Konservatuvarı , and from 1930–1931 she had her first appearances in the famous Istanbul pub Moulin Rouge . When Seyyan recorded the first Turkish-language Tango Mazi composed by Necip Celal Andel in 1932 , this gave her a nationwide breakthrough. The background was that, under the influence of the social and musical reforms, Mustafa Kemal's western music was promoted and a generation of Muslim singers appeared in public for the first time, including Seyyan Hanım. The genre of their works mostly covers the music of the then popular in Turkey Dances (Foxtrot, Rumba and especially Tango) and was merged with oriental and Turkish elements. When she married Lieutenant Sait Oskay and moved with him to Sarıkamış , she only traveled to Istanbul a few times and recorded a few records for the Odeon label and Columbia Records . A total of around 50 records are said to have been made. In 1942 she withdrew completely from her musical career and died in 1989 in her home in Maltepe . Kalan Müzik published the lost works in the album "Seyyan Hanım'dan Tangolar", and the label Oriente Musik published some works in the compilation Old World Tangos Vol. 4: Istanbul Tango 1927–1953 . Her life was edited literarily by the journalist Toktamış Ateş in the partly fictional work Seyyan Hanım ve Diğerleri .

Her songs are in the repertoire of Sema Moritz , which musically revives this period.
