The real spice shrub ( Calycanthus floridus ) is a species of the genus spice bushes in the family of the spice shrub plants (Calycanthaceae). The German common name goes back to the characteristic smells of wood, bark and flowers. As a further trivial names are allspice and Specereistrauch occupied.

Vegetative characteristics
The real spice shrub grows as a shrub and reaches heights of up to 3 meters. It forms runners through which vegetative propagation is possible. The smell of the wood and the bark is reminiscent of cloves .
The stalked leaves have a length of up to 12 centimeters. The upper side of the leaf is green and the underside gray-green and densely hairy.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from June to July. The flowers are single. The dark red flowers are up to 5 centimeters in diameter and have an intense smell of strawberries .
Occurrence
The real spice shrub is widespread in southeastern North America and occurs from Pennsylvania to the southeastern United States.
Systematics
Two varieties can be distinguished:
- Calycanthus floridus var. Floridus : It is found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi and Tennessee.
- Calycanthus floridus var. Glaucus (Willd.) Torr. & A.Gray (Syn .: Calycanthus glaucus Willd. , Calycanthus fertilis Walter ): It occurs in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, North Caolina and South Carolina.

The real spice bush is used in the temperate areas as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens. It prefers sunny or light partially shaded locations.
symbolism
In 1981 a stamp was issued in the GDR with a graphic representation of the real spice bush.
