Shadow Warrior is a first-person shooter from 3D Realms for the MS-DOS and Mac OS operating systems . The computer game was released in 1997 and is similar to the Duke Nukem 3D released by 3D Realms the previous year . Both games use the build engine , but Shadow Warrior has some enhancements such as voxel objects, transparent water surfaces and vehicles that can be controlled by the player. The source code of the game was released on April 1, 2005 under the GNU GPL license . However, the game content has been excluded and remains the property of 3D Realms.

Since 2016, the game and the sequels have also been distributed online in Germany, e.g. B. via Steam and without DRM also via GoG . Since then, some games in the series have also been playable on macOS and Linux .

The player takes on the role of the ninja Lo Wang, who works as a Shadow Warrior for Zilla Enterprises . When Lo Wang notices that Zilla is summoning creatures of the dark side to take control of Japan , he resigns and decides to take action against Zilla and his creatures at gunpoint.

Lo Wang explores different worlds in four selectable levels of difficulty, solves small puzzles and kills monsters in order to progress. In addition to his bare fists, Lo Wang has various weapons at his disposal. While he wears the katana (long sword) and the shuriken (throwing stars, replaced by darts in the UK version ) from the start, the other weapons are collected as the game progresses. In addition to a four-barreled shotgun, Uzis, a grenade launcher, various bombs and mines, crow's feet , a railgun and a rocket launcher that also fires tactical nuclear explosives, there is also a fire-breathing monster head and the possibility of summoning a copy of Lo Wang, which is made with a railgun armed fighting on the player's side.

Like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior is characterized by the fact that the character tears loose slogans and is thus presented as a cool action hero. There are numerous entertaining Easter Eggs hidden in the game world (e.g. references to films) that are not absolutely necessary for progress. In addition, many weapons have different modes. So you can run around with two instead of just one Uzi, the shotgun can be switched from single to double shot. Because of the explicit depictions of violence in the course of the game, Shadow Warrior was indexed in 1997 by the Federal Inspectorate for Writings Harmful to Young Persons (today: Federal Inspectorate for Media Harmful to Young People ) . In November 2016, however, the indexing was canceled again prematurely.

The game has a multiplayer mode in which up to eight people can play via IPX or two people via modem or serial interface with each other or against each other.
