Shadow of a hot summer (original title: Stíny horkého léta ) is a Czechoslovak film drama by František Vláčil from 1977 that shows the courageous action of an individual trying to save his loved ones because of prevailing violence and cruelty.

The young farmer Ondřej Baran lives with his young family in a mountain hermitage in the Beskids . Uninvited guests visited them in the summer of 1947. There are five fleeing Ukrainian soldiers. One is injured and needs medical attention. Beran is afraid to do something against the strangers because they threaten his life as well as that of his wife and children.

Awards

The film won the 1978 award for best film at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival . In the same year the film also won the main prize at the Festival českých a slovenských filmů in České Budějovice , as well as at the Filmový festival pracujících , as well as the main prize at the FF mladých in Banská Bystrica . The film also won the Czechoslovak Film Critics' Prize for 1977.
