Shalil Shankar (* 1947 in Shillong , Meghalaya ; real name: Shalil Shankar Chakraborty ) is an Indian sitar player and composer .

biography

Shalil Shankar was born in 1947 in Shilong, the then capital of Assam in what is now the state of Meghalaya, and discovered his passion for Indian music at a young age. In 1961 he became a student of Ravi Shankar , probably the best-known Indian musician in the West. In 1970 Shalil Shankar gave his first concert in Kolkata . In 1972 he himself was named the best Indian musician. The musician has lived in Switzerland in the town of Sursee for more than two decades . He advocates understanding between people - across all cultural, political and religious boundaries.

style

As a former student of Ravi Shankar, he is stylistically in line with Allauddin Khan's musical tradition, the school of vina players ( Binkar Gharana ). For Shalil Shankar, music is closely linked to an attitude towards life, to philosophy and religion. He plays Indian classical music and also incorporates folk, jazz and elements of African music into his sitar playing.

Film music

The music for the documentary Hippie Masala (Switzerland 2006; Damaris Lüthi and Ulrich Grossenbacher ) was composed and recorded by Shalil Shankar and the guitarist Disu Gmünder , member of the Swiss dialect band Patent Ochsner . The film was nominated for the Swiss Film Award in 2007.
