Shamli is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The city is the administrative seat of the Shamli district of the same name , which was founded in 2011. Shamli is located about 641 km from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow and is part of the National Capital Region , which favors its development. The city is divided into 25 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

The city's population is 107,266 according to the 2011 census. Shamli has a gender ratio of 876 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 80.32% in 2011 and thus above the national and regional average. Almost 69% of the population are Hindus , around 28% are Muslims and around 2% are Jainas . 13.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure

The city lies on the Delhi - Saharanpur (709B), Meerut - Karnal (709A) and Panipat - Khatima (709AD) highways.
