The five cap tankers built in 1950 in the USA for the US Navy formed the later Shell C-Class . From September 1958 to April 1959 , they were handed over from Atlas Tanker, Panama, to Deutsche Shell Tanker-Gesellschaft (DSTG), Hamburg .

The shipping company

The Deutsche Shell Tanker-Gesellschaft mbH., Hamburg, was founded in 1958 as a tanker company, managing directors were CF Schmidt and J. Baumgarten, full-time board members of Deutsche Shell . Immediately after the company was founded, the shipping company took over the steam turbine- powered tankers built in the USA for the Navy in 1949/50, with their home port in Hamburg.

The market for patent holders with steam turbine experience was swept empty in Germany at that time, so it was difficult to man the ships accordingly. Around 50 to 60 crew members were hired for each tanker . The ships were used from the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf to Hamburg. They were scrapped after around 25 years of service.
