For the station design were Adamson Associates Architects (entrance and distribution level) and Stevens Group Architects (platform level) responsible. The platform has no supporting pillars, and the high, vaulted ceiling gives the impression of a hangar . This impression is reinforced by incident daylight. The distribution level and the adjacent bus terminal also appear extremely spacious with their high ceilings, skylights and the use of lots of glass.

The station is surrounded by fallow land and there is little building density. Nevertheless, it has a good passenger frequency, which can be attributed to the design as a transport hub. In the bus terminal there are transfer options to nine bus routes operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and to a bus route from York Region Transit to the neighboring Regional Municipality of York . In addition, there is a park -and-ride facility for commuters with 641 chargeable parking spaces and a kiss-and-ride facility.

Two works of art adorn the station. Sliding Pi in the stairwell to the bus terminal is a large wall mosaic with square tiles. According to artist Arlene Stamp, the irregular pattern is based on the decimal places of the circle number (pi). In front of the entrance is Boney Bus , an iron sculpture by John McKinnon that is reminiscent of a bus.

history

There were plans for the station for the first time at the beginning of the 1980s, since this is where subway lines should meet. Political quarrels repeatedly delayed the planning. As a concession to the then still independent city of North York , the Metropolitan Toronto community association decided in 1989 to at least extend the Yonge University line from Wilson to Downsview. The groundbreaking did not happen until three years later. Due to the short distance between the planned route and ammunition storage facilities at the neighboring Downsview Air Force Base, the route had to be re-planned twice, and the environmental impact assessment also took a long time. Finally, the extension went into operation on March 30, 1996.

The Sheppard Line , opened in 2002, was originally intended to be extended from Sheppard-Yonge station along Sheppard Avenue to Downsview. Plans to do this had existed for two decades, but the construction of this section has never materialized due to a lack of funding. In 2003, the TTC decided to postpone the western part of the Sheppard Line indefinitely, as the low population density did not justify the underground.

On May 7, 2017, Downsview station was renamed Sheppard West; it was the first renaming in the history of the Toronto Subway. Since the extension of the Yonge University Line, which is under construction, will receive a new station called Downsview Park , confusion should be avoided. The extension of the route leads over the York University campus to the suburb of Vaughan and is 8.6 km long. After eight years of construction, it will open on December 17, 2017, two years later than originally planned.
