Sherman Library and Gardens

The Sherman Library and Gardens is an educational and research facility in Newport Beach in the US state of California . In addition to a library, it also houses a botanical garden .

The approximately 8,900 square meter facility is located on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Corona del Mar district and is located in a small park not far from the Pacific Ocean . There is a small entry fee.

history

The history of the Sherman Library and Gardens does not go far back. In 1955, Arnold D. Haskell bought the gardening site on which the facility is located today. The site also included a small adobe house. The owner planned to build a park that should be open to the public. The property was enlarged for the first time in the 1960s. The library building and greenhouses were built by 1974. It was also at this point in time that the facility was named after MH Sherman, Haskell's mentor and sponsor. Exhibitions are held today in the preserved adobe house.

Library

The library acquires, organizes, and maintains all kinds of items that tell the story of the Pacific Southwest. This area includes the states of California and Arizona as well as the adjacent parts of Nevada .

Despite its only short existence, the library has a considerable collection of historical documents. The inventory includes approximately 25,000 books and 2,000 rolls of microfilm . Numerous other manuscripts, maps, photographs and certificates complete the offer. One of its most significant holdings is the complete collection of all editions of the Los Angeles Times since its inception in 1881.

The Sherman Library and Gardens is also the repository of the archives of the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society . The library is available to interested readers and students alike for research purposes.

Botanical Garden

Different types of plants from all over the world are shown in greenhouses and parks. The Sherman Library and Gardens has an arrangement of various themed gardens with seasonal flower beds and fountains.

The selection ranges from desert plants to tropical plants . Orchids , heliconia and ginger thrive in a tropical house . There is also a cactus and succulent garden, a rose garden, a vegetable garden, a Japanese garden and a collection of ferns .
