Shirlie Kemp (born April 18, 1962 in Bushey , England ), also known by her former name Shirlie Holliman , is a British pop singer who was particularly popular in the 1980s as a background singer for the pop duo Wham! as well as being part of the singing duo Pepsi & Shirlie .

Life

Kemp grew up as one of five siblings and joined Wham! As a teenager through her then partner Andrew Ridgeley as a dancer and backing singer . . After Wham! in 1986 she founded DeMacque with "Pepsi" , also a former background singer with Wham! , the duo Pepsi & Shirlie . They had two top ten hits in Great Britain with Heartache and Goodbye Stranger . The duo separated in 1989 and has only performed sporadically since then. Kemp has worked as an actress and photographer ever since.

Shirlie Kemp has been married to Martin Kemp, the bassist and singer of the band Spandau Ballet , since 1988 . They have two children, born in 1989 and 1993. In 2019 they recorded the album In the Swing of It together as Martin & Shirlie . It was released in November and peaked at number 12 on the UK charts.

Trivia

Holliman featured in several Wham! Extra roles , for example at Club Tropicana and Last Christmas . She and her daughter played supporting roles in the video Mama the Spice Girls . The godfather of Holliman's children was Wham singer George Michael , who died in 2016 ; According to an obituary by her son on Twitter , Michael once introduced Holliman and Kemp to each other.
