action

Until a few weeks ago, Alex in his early 20s was still living at home in Dallas with his mother and sister. Now he is studying in Los Angeles , 1,500 miles from home, and has almost given up making friends with his fellow students. Sam, with whom he shares a room, likes to get drunk and doesn't seem interested in friendship. He would like to get back to his family as soon as possible.

When the college freshman visits a campus party called "The Shithouse", to which the more extroverted Maggie from the dormitory has invited him, a lot should change for him that night. She invites him to spin the bottle, and they both walk around town all night sharing intimate memories. They talk about things they haven't told anyone before. Alex admits for the first time that he has no friends in college. Maggie tells of the recent loss of her turtle Pete.

When Maggie ignores him the next day and seems to have forgotten her special night, Alex is desperate and wishes things were back to the way they were before.

Reviews

David Ehrlich of IndieWire writes in his review that even if Cooper Raiff's debut film was shot with a certain distance, which reflects the indifference of the outside world, he still meets you with the openness of a video diary. The way Raiff plays his protagonist Alex, and practically everything else about Shithouse , is fascinating, and the dialogues felt neither improvised nor exaggerated. Whenever Shithouse seems to turn into any movie, Dylan Gelula in the role of Maggie is there to get things back on track. Shithouse is a promising debut from someone with a clear aptitude for personalizing shared experiences and knows that growing up can be a lonely process, but also that most people just feel like they have to go through it on their own, Ehrlich said.

Matthew Monagle from The Playlist notes in his review that as this evening unfolds, when Maggie and Alex roam the city, a dialogue begins between them that, in its kind of radical honesty, can only come about between two people who have only just met to have. Raiff understands this kind of honesty on a very intuitive level and would do well not to emphasize these moments in the film too much. When Maggie and Alex tell each other things that they have not even confided to loved ones, an intimacy develops between the two that makes him admit his loneliness . Maggie is the first to "see" something in Alex, relieve him of his homesickness and encourage him to deal with the world around him. In the event that there are doubts about where the sympathies of the film should flow, Raiff wrote some of the most important lines of dialogue for Alex to make it clear that Maggie is the one who needs to lead a more authentic life.
