Shmuel Yeivin

Shmuel Yeivin (born September 2, 1896 in Odessa ; died February 28, 1982 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli archaeologist. Yeivin came from a Zionist family. He came to Palestine with his parents during the Second Aliyah and attended the Herzlija High School in Tel Aviv. He went to London to study archeology, where he was trained by Sir Flinders Petrie . Yeivin was the first director of the Antiquities Administration of the State of Israel, founded in 1948 . He was awarded the Bialik Prize in 1955 and the Israel Prize in the Jewish Studies section in 1968 .
