content

The film is split into two stories.

The first part takes place in Japan in the mid-17th century when the few Christians were persecuted, tortured and killed for their beliefs. A cruel shogun in Japan has countless people tortured and killed only for his amusement and because they are Christians. People die horrific deaths and suffer torture long before they die. Some tortures are too harmless for the perverted shogun, so he instructs his henchman to invent new, even more perverse torture tools. One day, a strong samurai fighter appears in the area, who meets a nice girl and her sister. When the samurai is brought before the shogun, he is immediately employed by him as a bodyguard, although the samurai does not really enjoy the daily torture of the shogun. When his acquaintance and her sister become the shogun's sex toys, the samurai wants to flee with them to save them from being raped. In the end, however, they are caught and suffer a cruel, agonizing death for breaking the law.

The second story takes place 200 years later and shows the harsh conditions in a brothel in which women are treated like simple goods and have no rights of their own. A man has fun with many women in a cathouse, but cannot pay. So he is punished and has to work off his debts for a year by cleaning. But after a while he notices how the prostitutes are being tortured and treated inhumanely there. When a man falls in love with one of the women after one night and tries to escape with her, he is punished. However, since the cleaning man knew about the escape, he should carry out his punishment and emasculate him. After that, however, he has enough: He escapes with a woman he met in the whorehouse and with whom he fell in love. However, they are later caught on their flight and sentenced to death.

Reviews

“Teruo Ishii raised the bar for cinematic violence very high with his Tokugawa films in the late 1960s. The Oxen Split Torturing, staged in the same style by Yuuji Makiguchi, is no less squeamish and features some really nasty torture and killing scenes, which are mainly directed against women. Any statement in the plot is nullified by the superficially depicted violence and the film appears more like a loose series of atrocities. That little plot offers far too little dramaturgy for the film to be kept exciting over its entire duration. "
