Ema Shōko ( Japanese 江 間 章 子 ; born March 13, 1913 in Takada (today: Jōetsu ), Niigata Prefecture ; † March 12, 2005 in Setagaya , Tokyo Prefecture ) was a Japanese poet and librettist .

Life

Ema Shōko was born in Takada, Niigata Prefecture in 1913. Her father died at the age of two, so that her mother moved with her to her parents' house in Tairadate (today: Hachimantai ) in Iwate Prefecture . She started school at Shizuoka Girls' High School when she was 12 years old. From 1930 on she attended the Surugadai girls' school. In 1936 she published the collection of poems Haru e no shōtai ( 春 へ の 招待 ). In 1949 and two years later, in 1951, her two most famous works appeared with the poetry collection Natsu no omoide ( 夏 の 思 い 出 ) and Hana no machi ( ihre esten 街 ). In 1992 she was made an honorary citizen of Setagaya. Further awards as “First Honorary Citizen” of Nishine and Katashina ( Gunma Prefecture ) followed.

Ema Shōko died in 2005 at the age of 91 from a cerebral haemorrhage in a hospital in Setagaya, Tokyo.
