Sholinghur ( Tamil : சோளிங்கர் Cōḷiṅkar [ soːɭiŋɡər ], even Sholinghur ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 31,000 (2011 census). Sholingur is known for the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, a shrine of the Hindu god Vishnu .

Sholinghur is located in northern Tamil Nadu about 50 kilometers northeast of the district capital Vellore and 120 kilometers west of Chennai (Madras) in the Taluk Wallajah of the Vellore district . It is only a few kilometers to the border of the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh . The nearest train station is in Arakkonam , about 30 kilometers to the east. Sholinghur is surrounded by rugged cliffs, foothills of the Eastern Ghats .

Sholinghur or Sholingur is the anglicized spelling of the Tamil name Solingar (also Sholingar or Cholingar ). This name is said to be derived from Cholalingapuram , "City of the Lingas of Chola ". According to legend, the Chola kings found a natural linga (symbol of the god Shiva ) here and built a sanctuary, the Choleshwara or Sholeshwara temple, in its place. Sholinghur is best known for its important Vishnuit sanctuary. This is spread over three locations: South of the city on a large rock is the Lakshmi-Narasimha Temple, which is dedicated to Vishnu in his incarnation as Narasimha , and the Anjaneya Temple , which is dedicated to the god Hanuman . The third temple is in the city center. The Sholinghur sanctuary under the name Tirukkadigai was sung about by the Alvars (Vishnuit poet saints) and is therefore one of the Divya Desams (108 holy places of Tamil Vishnuism).

In 1781 a battle took place at Sholinghur in the Second Mysore War , in which the troops of the British East India Company defeated an army of Hyder Ali of Mysore .

95 percent of Sholinghur's residents are Hindus , 3 percent are Muslims and 2 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 92 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 5 percent speak Telugu and 2 percent speak Urdu .
