Shrek (* around 1994 ; † June 6, 2011 ) was a merino sheep in New Zealand , which gained national fame.

Shrek was one of 17,000 sheep on an 11,000 acre farm in Tarras . For six years up until 2004, he managed to avoid shearing by hiding in caves. Television broadcasts of his capture and subsequent shearing , which was also broadcast live, earned him enormous popularity. When it was sheared, 27 kg of wool came together.

In May 2004, it hit the New Zealand parliament with Prime Minister Helen Clark together. His owner John Perriam earned 16,000 New Zealand dollars per performance through touring . In total, he donated around $ 150,000 of the proceeds to the New Zealand Children's Cancer Aid. Shrek also became the main character in several children's books.

On June 6, 2011, on veterinary advice, it was euthanized because of age-related illnesses. Shrek is now stuffed in the New Zealand National Museum of Te Papa.
