Tarras is a small settlement in the Central Otago District of the Otago Regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located about 27 km southeast of Wanaka and about 27 km northeast of Cromwell , on the northwestern edge of the plain of the Lindis River , which flows into the Clutha River about 7 km southwest . The New Zealand State Highway 8 runs through the settlement and overcomes the Lindis Pass around 34 km to the northeast and connects the settlement with Cromwell to the southwest .
economy
Most of the farms in the region raise sheep with merino sheep , but there are also other breeds of sheep, beef cattle and deer breeding. In the last few years, some wineries have been set up that mainly grow Pinot Noir and Riesling .
Education
With the Tarras School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2017, 13 students attended the school.
