Katō Shūichi ( Japanese 加藤 周一 ; born September 19, 1919 in Kaneō-machi, Shibuya-machi , Toyotama-gun (today: Shibuya, Shibuya-ku ), Tokyo Prefecture ; † December 5, 2008 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese medic , Cultural and literary scholar , critic and author.

Life

Katō studied medicine at the renowned University of Tokyo and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . He conducted research at several international institutes and finally turned to Japanese cultural and literary studies. Until 1985 he was professor of this subject at the Tokyo Sophia University and also guest lecturer at the Berlin Free University and the LMU Munich . His writings found worldwide distribution.

He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bucharest , Venice , Grenoble and, since 2001, from the Free University of Berlin.

After he held a visiting professorship at Ritsumeikan University in 1988, he became director of the Museum for World Peace ( 国際 平和 ミ ュ ー ジ ア ム , Kokusai Heiwa Myūjiamu ) of the university in 1992 .

In 1980 he received the Osaragi Jirō Prize for Nihon bungakushi josetsu ( 日本 文学 史 序 説 , German History of Japanese Literature ISBN 3-502-16481-9 ) and the Asahi Prize in 1994
