The Siberian club insect ( Gomphocerus sibiricus ) is a short-antennae insect from the family of field locusts (Acrididae). The species is the only one of its kind in Europe.

features

The 18 to 25 mm large species can easily be recognized by the slightly culled and flattened (not white at the end) antennae tips, the humped, arched pronotum and, in the males, by the vesicular thickened front rails. The coloring forms a variable mixture of brown, green and gray tones, sometimes also yellow tones. The characteristic and quite loud singing consists of a quick sequence of "trä" syllables, which are recited in 15 to 20 seconds of verse.

Occurrence

The species is the only grasshopper species in Germany that occurs exclusively in the Bavarian Alpine region; its largest area of distribution is in the Oberallgäu district. It is a Euro-Siberian species with the main distribution area in Siberia. In Central and Southern Europe, it is limited to the high mountains: the Pyrenees and Sierra de Guadarrama , the central and southern Apennines , the Alps , the Carpathian Mountains , the Balkan Mountains and the Caucasus .

Typical habitats in Germany are dry, raw soil or rock-rich, stony and, if possible, full sun alpine lawns or lawn complexes of various forms.

Way of life

The Siberian club insect feeds herbivore . The eggs are laid in the ground. The Siberian club insect is known from other countries for enormous population fluctuations up to mass reproduction. Mass reproductions with a harmful effect on agriculture have not yet become known from Germany. Despite good flight ability, it does not seem to be able to colonize all suitable habitats in the Alpine region.

Hazard and protection

The occurrences in Germany appear to be stable.
