Sidney Merlin

Sidney Louis Walter Merlin (born April 26, 1856 in Piraeus , † 1952 in Athens ) was a British botanist and marksman who took part in the 1896 Summer Olympics , the 1900 Summer Games and the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games.

Life

His family had lived in Greece since around 1830 , as his father was a British consul in Piraeus. Merlin married Zaira Theotokis, the daughter of the Prime Minister of Corfu , Georgios Theotokis . He divorced her some time later and married Katia. Merlin was known in Greece for his botanical achievements. He was the first to bring the “Washington Navel” orange to Greece. In Greece it is still called “Merlin” today. He also planted the first kumquats tree in Greece . Merlin is related to the Olympic marksman Gerald Merlin .
