Sidney Shapiro

Sidney Shapiro (Chinese name: Shā Bólǐ沙博 理; born December 23, 1915 in Brooklyn , New York ; died October 18, 2014 in Beijing ) was a writer and translator who was born in the United States and has been in China since 1947 lived.

Life

Sidney Shapiro came from a Jewish family. He studied law and then learned Chinese in the US Army during World War II . He came to Shanghai in 1947 , where he met his future wife Fengzi (Phoenix) (-1996), an actress and supporter of the Chinese Communist Party , which ran an illegal magazine.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Shapiro worked as an author and translator for the publishing house for foreign language literature in Beijing for almost fifty years . His best-known work is Outlaws of the Marsh , a translation of the famous Chinese novel Shui hu zhuan , known in German under the title Die Räuber vom Liang-Schan-Moor .

In 1963 Shapiro became a Chinese citizen. During the Cultural Revolution he worked on the translation of Shui hu zhuan , among other things . His wife was imprisoned in forced labor camps from 1969 to 1975 . In 1971, without his wife, he made his first visit to the USA and saw his family of origin.

Other important works include his autobiography An American in China , later reprinted under the title I chose China , and Jews in old China , an annotated collection of essays by Chinese scholars on the Jews of Kaifeng .

Shapiro became a member of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People in 1983 .
