Location of the Transylvanian barracks in Romania

The Transylvanian barracks was built between 1719 and 1729 by Claudius Florimund Mercy , commanding general of the Temescher Banat , and with a length of 483 meters it was the largest barracks in the city of Timișoara, which is now part of Romania . It was demolished between 1961 and 1965 and the Parcul Civic was created in its place in 1971 . Today only a small remnant of the Transylvanian barracks remains, which is used as a second stage by the Timișoara National Theater.

Surname

The barracks originally got their name after the neighboring Siebenbürger Tor at the eastern end of the barracks, while the barracks at the Wiener Tor, for example, was called Wiener Kaserne. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the plant was finally called in Hungarian Erdélyi kaszárnya or Erdélyi laktanya and, as a result of the division of the Banat from 1919, in Romanian Cazarma Transilvania or Cazarma Ardeleană .

description

The Transylvanian barracks had a length of 483 meters and was one story. It formed an irregular arch that stretched from the Josephs to the Hamilton bastions of the old fortress . The floor plan of the building was bent eight times, with only two of the corners forming a right angle. The foundation walls of the medieval fortress were used as the foundation for the construction. The unadorned barracks was loosened up by a double row of windows and the relief arch on the ground floor. The gate tower rose 20 meters in the middle of the facility. It was built on a square base with an octagonal baroque cornice. There were four oval windows below the cornice. Ten companies could be accommodated in the Transylvanian barracks . It also served as a food store and also served as a prison.

The Transylvanian barracks were built to serve as a fortress wall in a south-easterly direction and as a bastion in a north-easterly direction . In the 18th century, the fortress harbor was still located in the barracks courtyard. The gate tower was oriented towards Piața Sfântu Gheorghe . From the top of the tower you had a view of the entire fortress.
