Piața Sfântu Gheorghe (German: Platz des Heiligen Georg or Sankt-Georgs-Platz ) is one of the oldest squares in Timișoara . It is named after the formerly oldest church in the city, the "Georgskirche", built in 1323 and demolished in 1914. In the 18th century, it was originally called Jesuiterplatz later Seminärplatz and after the Hungarian-Austrian balance of 1867 finally Hungarian Szent György tér . As a result of the division of the Banat , it was given its current name for the first time in 1919, but was still called Pia tra Vasile Roaită or Piața Ion Constantin Brătianu in the meantime .

Sankt-Georgs-Platz has always been an ecclesiastic , cultural and financial center . The first university with two faculties for philosophy and law was established here in 1845 and the “First Timisoara Sparkassa” in 1855. After Domplatz and Freiheitsplatz, Sankt-Georgs-Platz was the third largest square within the former fortress walls .

history

Sankt-Georgs-Platz is one of the oldest squares in the city. It got its name after the Georgskirche, which was probably built in 1323. During the Turkish occupation (1526-1718) it was used as a mosque . Next to the mosque was a cemetery with 160 graves.

During the Habsburg Monarchy , the church was given to the Jesuit order (1718–1773). The first mass took place on April 8, 1718. After the construction of the Roman Catholic Cathedral (1754), the old St. George's Church lost its importance. In the same year major renovations began, which lasted until 1769. The new facade was in the baroque style and was carried out by the master builder Franz Anton Platel. The church belonged to the Jesuit order until its dissolution in 1773. In 1845 the Catholic seminary was built in the immediate vicinity of the church , which was the city's first university . It housed two faculties , one for philosophy and one for law . In this context, the place was renamed "seminar place". In 1914 the seminary and the Georgskirche were demolished.

From 1869 on, the Timisoara horse-drawn tram in the direction of the Fabrikstadt and Josefstadt departed from Sankt-Georgs-Platz . Later, the electric tram , which opened in 1899, had a stop on the square, which has since been abandoned.

The square is lined with two bank buildings. In 1855 the "First Timisoara Sparkassa" was built here. After the church and the seminary were demolished, the “Timisoara Bank Palace” was added in 1914. In the south of the square was the “Klapka House”, the house where Georg Klapka was born , the son of Mayor Josef Klapka , who founded the first lending library in Timisoara.

In 1996 the bronze statue of St. George was placed in the middle of the square . The sculptor Silvia Radu and the architect Mihai Botescu dedicated the monument to the children of the revolution. In the base of the statue, Ştefan Călărăşanu engraved the names of the children who lost their lives during the 1989 revolution .
