Siege is an American hardcore punk band. Although she has no official releases apart from several demos , she is considered one of the pioneering bands of the later Grindcore .

history

Siege was formed in 1981 as a high school band by drummer Robert Williams, guitarist Kurt Habelt and bassist Henry McNamee in Weymouth , Massachusetts . The first line-up was completed with singer Kevin Mahoney . The four musicians aspired to become the fastest band in the world. After intensive jam sessions , the quartet began performing live in 1983 and quickly gained a wide fan base. In February 1984 Siege recorded the five tracks of their demo Drop Dead at the Boston Radio Beat Studios under the direction of music producer Lou Giordano . In October the three tracks were recorded, which were represented on the 1985 sampler Cleanse the Bacteria , edited by Brian "Pushead" Schroeder of Septic Death . This was followed by more live performances, until tensions arose in the band and they broke up in the fall of 1985 before a performance at the New York club CBGB . In 1990, drummer Robert Williams and guitarist Kurt Habelt tried to reorganize the band with the help of Seth Putnam . The trio recorded a few tracks, Life of Hate of which appeared on a sampler. The attempt failed just a year later due to the different musical views of the two original members of Siege.

The band's few studio recordings were later re-released several times. In 1994 Relapse Records released a sampler called Drop Dead , which, in addition to the 1984 demo, contained the three tracks from Cleanse the Bacteria .

The band has been active again since 2016.

meaning

With their hitherto unique combination of hardcore punk and heavy metal , the extreme speed and the brutal text content, Siege had a decisive influence on the grindcore movement that was emerging in Birmingham, England . Leading genre representatives like Napalm Death cited Siege's music as one of their main influences. Alongside Repulsion and Napalm Death, the band is counted among the fathers of grindcore.
