Siegfried Dähne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Dähne (born October 13, 1929 in Meißen ; † December 3, 2011 ) was a German chemist and a scientist in the field of dye chemistry .

Life

Dähne studied chemistry from 1949 to 1957 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . As part of his diploma thesis with Otto Neunhoeffer , he dealt synthetically and spectroscopically with investigations on pyrene . In 1961 he was with the thesis " adsorbed visible and infrared spectra of silver halide, photographically useful dyes " doctorate . Also at the Humboldt University in 1968 the habilitation took place . In 1972 Dähne received the license to teach at the Technical University of Dresden and in 1980 was appointed professor by the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

From 1957 Dähne worked as laboratory manager and from 1963 as department manager at the Institute for Optics and Spectroscopy at the Academy of Sciences. Since he had refused to work as an unofficial employee of the Stasi on several occasions , he was banned from traveling to western countries from 1971 and his managerial functions were withdrawn in 1984. After 1989, Dähne was able to continue his research at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing until 1995 as laboratory manager and finally until 2001 as a consultant.

Siegfried Dähne and his wife Anneliese had a daughter and two sons.

Scientific work

Dähne's research activities focused on the electronic states of organic molecules with π-electron systems . From the polymethine concept published by Walter König in 1926, he developed a general theory of the color and structure of conjugated organic compounds.

His work on sensitizing dyes initiated the development of highly sensitive silver halide films worldwide. Dähne was involved in the development of the world's first pulsed laser fluorimeter based on laser-induced fluorescence . With these newly developed spectroscopic methods, Dähne researched aggregation phenomena of dyes.
