Siegfried Schmidt (historian)

Siegfried Schmidt (born January 17, 1930 in Dresden , † December 18, 1986 in Jena ) was a German historian for the general history of modern times .

life and work

After the Second World War, Schmidt began studying history at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1948 to 1952 , and his teachers included Karl Griewank . From 1954 he worked as an assistant at the Historical Institute of the University of Jena and in the same year completed his dissertation on: The Development of the Political Opposition in the Kingdom of Saxony between 1830 and 1848 . Four years later he got a job as a senior assistant . In 1961 he received a lectureship . Since 1960 he has participated in the historian's collective on the "History of the University of Jena 1548/1558 to 1958", under the direction of Max Steinmetz . After completing his habilitation thesis on Robert Blum (1965), he became a lecturer in 1966 and in 1971 was given a full professorship in general history. After an illness he died in Jena in 1986.

His main research interests included the history of the parties between 1789 and 1848 in Germany, the revolution of 1848/1849 and the history of universities and science in Jena.
