Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars , also short Refugee All Stars , is a band from Sierra Leone that was founded in 1970 by refugees in Guinea . She combines traditional African music with Caribbean reggae .

history

Reuben Koroma, his wife Grace and Francis (Franco) Lamgba met in a refugee camp in Guinea after they fled the civil war in Sierra Leone . Together they began to make music, initially to entertain the other refugees. They were equipped with instruments by an aid organization and developed into an increasingly professional band. After the end of the civil war in 2002, the now six-member group traveled back to their hometown Freetown with the support of UNHCR , where they were joined by the remaining members of Reuben Koroma's former band. The UNHCR made it possible for them to record their first album Living Like A Refugee . In the texts, mainly written by Reuben Koroma in various languages, including English and Krio , they often deal with their experiences as refugees.

The award-winning documentary by the musicians and filmmakers Bankers White and Zach Niles, who met the band in Guinea in 2002 and accompanied them on their return to Sierra Leone, contributed significantly to the group's international fame.

The Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are featured on the soundtrack of the movie Blood Diamond with the song Ankala . Together with the American rock band Aerosmith , they recorded a version of the John Lennon song Give Peace a Chance , which was published in 2007 on the sampler Make Some Noise - The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur published by Amnesty International .
