Sigbert Wagener

Father Sigbert Wagener OFMCap , actually Karl Emil Wagener (born October 29, 1919 in Krefeld ; † April 13, 2004 ), was a German Capuchin , religious priest and high school teacher. He became known as an entomologist for his work with butterflies .

Life

After attending the elementary and secondary school in Krefeld, Wagener attended the private school of the episcopal monastery in Bensheim and graduated from the Electoral High School in Bensheim in 1938 . Three days later he entered the Capuchin order as a novice in Stühlingen . Nevertheless, he was drafted as a soldier and was deployed in North Africa. In 1943 he was captured by the Americans and spent the remainder of the war in Algeria and Canada .

After his release he put his religious vows , and received in 1948 by Bishop Heinrich Roleff in Münster the priesthood . First he studied theology and from 1948 natural sciences at the universities of Münster , Heidelberg and Mainz . After his teaching degree, he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . In 1957, Father Sigbert began teaching at the St. Josef Gymnasium in Bocholt , where he taught biology and chemistry in particular, and retired in 1981 as director of studies . At the same time he worked as a priest in Bocholt until the abolition of the Capuchin Convention in the summer of 2000.

Act

Wagener was a dedicated entomologist and was nicknamed " The Moth ". He documented butterflies on trips around the world for several months . During his time in Bocholt, he paid particular attention to researching and preserving the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn . He donated his butterfly collection of more than 100,000 copies to the Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. He was one of the founding fathers of the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica (SEL) and represented on the board for over 16 years.

In 1995, together with Gerhard Hesselbarth and Harry van Oorschot, he published the three-volume work “The butterflies of Turkey taking into account the neighboring countries”, as well as other scientific papers. In addition, Sigbert Wagener was involved as a consultant in numerous nature conservation projects, including on the advisory board of the State Institute for Ecology, Land Management and Forests in North Rhine-Westphalia .
