Sigismund Freiherr von Zedlitz und Neukirch (pseudonym Hegewald ; born May 24, 1838 at Neukirch Palace, today Nowy Kościół ; † July 8, 1903 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German hunting cynologist and hunting writer .

Life

Together with Carl Rehfus ("Oberländer") and other cynologists, Hegewald was the initiator of the association founded in 1891 for testing working dogs for hunting . He was mainly involved in the basic breeding of the German wire hair and the new breed of the Poodle pointer . The focus here was always on the performance concept, his goal was to create a "fully functional dog", i.e. a pointing dog that can also perform all other hunting tasks such as rummaging around, looking for lost places, water work and welding work . This ideal can be found today in the German and continental pointing dog breeds.

Hegewald was one of the first advocates of performance tests and in 1892 created the German Working Dog Stud Book (DGStB) in which all system and performance tests are entered and which is still run by the JGHV today.

He also wrote on the subject of hunting cynology, so he was u. a. Editor of the Waidmanns (1896), editor of the Oberländer Jagdzeitung and author of the books The Working Dog for Hunting (1881) and the History of the Development of German Cynology (1889).

The "German Hunting Painters Album", Leipzig, May 1881, signed "Hegewald, practical hunter", was published at the opening of the "International Hunting Exhibition in Bad Cleve ". Included were the hunting painters living at the time, who were also illustrators of the hunting newspaper Der Weidmann, sheets for hunters and hunting enthusiasts: First Illustrirte Deutsche Jagdzeitung .

The annual international breeding selection test of the Deutsch-Drahthaar Association bears the name Hegewald in his honor .
