The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Sigismund in Daverden (Flecken Langwedel , Verden district , Lower Saxony ) was built at the end of the 12th century on the Geestrücken above the Aller and Weser valley and is therefore one of the oldest churches in the Verden parish .

Patronage

The Daverden Church is dedicated to St. Sigismund , a Burgundian king from the 6th century, who is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.

building

Tower seen from the northwest.

The building, originally a single-nave brick building , was erected probably as early as the late 12th century. This is indicated by the Romanesque arches of the choir and the originally free-standing, 24 m high bell tower with walls up to 1.20 m thick. The dimensions of the tower foundations are 5.30 by 6.30 meters.

Originally the church building probably had a flat ceiling. Based on a church bill from 1718, it is assumed that the vault and the Gothic windows were installed at this time . In 1720, a half-timbered building was added to the northern part of the nave, which was replaced by a massive extension as part of a renovation between 1899 and 1901. The sacristy on the south side was also added during this period. This gave the church its characteristic cross shape today.

Furnishing

The pulpit and the altar date from 1650. The altar is a gift from the nobles Rönne and Mandelsloh . The altarpieces depict the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. On the altar are three female figures who symbolize love (with child), faith (with cross and chalice) and hope (with anchor). To the right and left of the altar, demons can be seen looking away from the altar. The coats of arms of the donors can be seen on the two columns of the altar.

organ

The organ was built by Hermann Kröger in 1650 and completely restored in 1988/89.

Bells

Two bells hang in the tower , which are a rarity due to their similar tone.
